Pro‑Ject Audio Systems has unveiled the Pre Box S3, a compact stereo preamplifier designed to simplify hi‑fi. With 13 inputs and outputs, the Pre Box S3 acts as a central hub for vinyl, digital sources, TV audio and wireless streaming, all within a single box.

While Pro‑Ject is perhaps better-known for its vinyl turntables, the company has developed a versatile range of compact electronics that are designed to be easy to operate, reliable and which integrate into almost any audio system. The Pre Box S3 continues that approach, putting all audio sources in a box with a single interface and a remote control.

A Hub For All Reasons

The Pre Box S3 brings multiple devices together such as a turntable, CD transport, streaming device, TV or computer. The preamplifier handles source switching and volume control, allowing active speakers or a power amplifier to focus on the sound. Its compact design that’s easy to fit in any space.

Extensive connectivity is at the heart of the Pre Box S3 and it offers two line-level RCA inputs for CD players or other external sources. Then there is a MM phono input with 45dB gain, two optical (Toslink) S/PDIF inputs, one coaxial S/PDIF, one asynchronous USB-C input (PCM up to 24‑bit/192kHz), plus an HDMI eARC connector for a TV. Finally, there is support for Bluetooth 5.0 with aptX HD audio codec support up to 24-bit/48kHz streaming.

Next, we come to the outputs. There is a single variable RCA output for connection to a power amplifier. For headphone listeners, there is a 6.3 mm jack with its own amplifier. There’s also a fixed line-level output for second zones or external equipment, a dedicated subwoofer output, 12V trigger for linked devices, plus RS232 connection for integration into custom or multi-room installations.
