Houston’s FIFA Fan Festival hit capacity on its opening day Thursday, forcing organizers to temporarily stop admitting new fans as thousands flocked to the World Cup watch party in East Downtown. The crowds gathered as fans watched Mexico take on South Africa in one of the opening matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup,
Officials told Chron the festival reached its maximum occupancy and additional visitors would not be allowed inside. Earlier, organizers said new guests could enter as others left, but later clarified that the site was at capacity and would remain closed to new arrivals for the time being. Officials said they would reassess conditions at halftime.
Photos from the scene showed long lines stretching outside the festival grounds, with one volunteer telling Chron that fans had been waiting since 11 a.m. Organizers were aiming to keep attendance at roughly 7,500 people at any given time.
With the festival at capacity, some fans who were unable to get inside gathered outside the gates to watch the match and wait for a chance to enter if space became available.
The overwhelming turnout comes as little surprise given the excitement surrounding the tournament. According to the Houston Chronicle, organizers expect roughly 15,000 people to cycle through the festival each day.
It remains unclear when additional fans will be allowed inside. Officials said any decision to reopen entry points would depend on crowd levels throughout the day.
