Saturday’s match between Czech clubs Slavia Prague and Sparta Prague was abandoned in the second half following a pitch invasion.
Slavia led 3-2 Fortuna Arena and was poised to celebrate another league title when home supporters came onto the pitch before the final whistle.
According to BBC Sport’s Flora Snelson, Sparta goalkeeper Jakub Surovcik was apparently struck by a flare.
“For someone to run up and threaten me to my face during the match, accompanied by an assault, is absolutely unacceptable, and I will be pursuing this through legal channels,” Surovcik wrote on social media (via Snelson).
The Associated Press reported Sparta defender Jakub Martinec and forward Matyáš Vojta were also targeted by Slavia supporters.
Slavia chief executive Jaroslav Tvrdík called the situation “a disgrace that we all bear.”
“Sparta Praha, the visiting fans, the referees, the football public, and all decent Slavia supporters who left the stadium yesterday with broken hearts,” he said. “The values of Slavia are not hatred and violence. We accept responsibility and draw consequences. What took place at the end of yesterday’s derby at Fortuna Arena is the most difficult moment in the modern history of the club.”
Tvrdík also announced that Fortuna Arena’s North Stand, which is where the club’s most passionate supporters are seated for matches, will be closed indefinitely. Those who participated in the pitch invasion will receive lifetime bans.
The Czech Republic’s League Football Association, which oversees club football in the country, said it’s working with local authorities as well:
“The League Football Association is ready to provide the police of the Czech Republic with maximum cooperation in identifying the persons who participated in the attack on the players and supports the consistent imposition of responsibility against all perpetrators.”
Slavia forward Tomáš Chorý and right back David Douděra received red cards during Saturday’s match. Tvrdík said the two players have been suspended for the remainder of the season and have been transfer-listed ahead of the summer window.
Slavia hosts two more matches this season.
