India’s sub-compact SUV segment (3.8m to 4.0m) continued its strong growth trajectory in May 2026, recording total sales of 1,17,889 units. Compared to 98,966 units sold in May 2025, the segment registered a healthy 19.12% year-on-year growth, gaining 18,923 additional units. The battle for the top spot remained extremely close, with just 478 units separating the segment’s two best-selling SUVs.

Maruti Fronx topped the sub-compact SUV charts in May 2026 with sales of 20,686 units. Compared to 13,584 units sold in May last year, Fronx registered a strong 52.28% growth, gaining 7,102 units. It commanded a 17.55% share of the segment. Closely following was Tata Punch and Punch EV with combined sales of 20,208 units. The micro-SUV recorded 53.87% growth over 13,133 units sold a year ago and was among the biggest volume gainers in the segment.

Tata Nexon and Nexon EV secured third place with sales of 19,100 units. The SUV gained 6,004 units over May 2025 volumes of 13,096 units, translating into a 45.85% growth rate. Together, Fronx, Punch and Nexon accounted for over 50% of all sub-compact SUV sales during the month. Maruti Brezza ranked fourth with 13,425 units. However, it was among the few major models to report a decline, with sales down 13.75% from 15,566 units sold in May 2025.

Hyundai Venue delivered a strong performance with sales of 11,714 units, growing 55.77% over 7,520 units sold last year. Venue was one of the fastest-growing mainstream SUVs in the segment. Kia Sonet followed with 9,707 units, registering a healthy 20.52% YoY increase. Hyundai Exter also posted positive growth, with sales rising 11.80% to 6,595 units.

Mahindra XUV 3XO and XUV 3XO EV recorded combined sales of 6,717 units, down 15.53% from 7,952 units sold in May 2025. The model lost over 1,200 units year-on-year despite remaining among the segment’s top sellers. Skoda Kylaq reported sales of 3,443 units, a decline of 30.43% compared to 4,949 units sold a year ago. Toyota Taisor also saw volumes drop by 17.76% to 2,496 units.

Nissan Magnite registered sales of 1,665 units, growing 24.81% over last year. Renault Kiger also posted a positive result with 656 units, up 19.06%. At the lower end of the rankings, Maruti Jimny sold 516 units, down 24.34% YoY. Kia Syros reported 961 units, significantly lower than the 3,611 units recorded in May 2025.

Month-on-Month Performance

Compared to April 2026, the segment declined marginally by 1.05%, losing 1,255 units. Fronx strengthened its lead with a 9.86% MoM growth, while Punch and Nexon grew by 5.76% and 5.37%, respectively. Most rivals reported month-on-month declines, including Brezza (-4.95%), Venue (-5.68%), Sonet (-7.88%), Exter (-18.54%) and XUV 3XO (-10.64%). An exception was Kia Syros, which recorded a sharp 73.47% increase over April volumes.

Top 3 Control Half The Market

The biggest takeaway from May 2026 sales was the dominance of Fronx, Punch and Nexon. Together, the three models sold 59,994 units and accounted for nearly 51% of the entire sub-compact SUV segment. With Fronx and Punch separated by less than 500 units, the fight for segment leadership remains one of the closest battles in the Indian passenger vehicle market.

OEM Wise Performance

OEM-wise, Tata led the sub-compact SUV segment in May 2026 with 39,308 units sold, driven by strong demand for Punch and Nexon. Maruti Suzuki followed closely with 34,627 units, supported by Fronx’s strong performance. Hyundai secured third place with 18,309 units, posting healthy growth from Venue and Exter. While Nissan and Renault recorded double-digit growth, Kia, Mahindra, Toyota and Skoda saw sales decline compared to May 2025. Together, Tata and Maruti accounted for nearly 63% of total segment sales during the month.
