Veteran lyricist Sameer Anjaan blames CBFC, demanding why Sarke Chunar from KD: The Devil was allowed to be passed before banning it. He adds that writers get blamed very easily.
After failing to appear before the NCW over the Sarke Chunar row earlier this month, Nora Fatehi has been given a final opportunity to be present for the next hearing on April 27.
The song, Sarke Chunar, from upcoming Kannada film, KD: The Devil, featuring Nora Fatehi was banned last month following intense social media backlash over its lyrics laced with sexual innuendos. The AICWA, in its letter to CBFC chairman Prasoon Joshi, demanded an FIR against the makers. Despite a summon, Nora failed to appear before the NCW on April 6.
She has been given a final opportunity to be present for the next hearing on April 27. In a video statement, she had clarified that the Hindi version of the track was not approved by her, urging viewers not to hold her responsible. Lyricist Raqueeb Alam had stated that he only translated the lyrics from Kannada and that Prem, the director, wrote the original song.
Now, speaking exclusively to News18, veteran lyricist Sameer Anjaan, shares that it’s wrong to blame a writer or a lyricist in cases like this. At the same time, he calls out the double entendre content of the song and states it’s pointless to compare it to Sarkai Lo Khatiya, a song he penned for Raja Babu, that eventually got criticised for being loaded with sexual wordplay.
“Log humesha writer ko gherne ki koshish karte hai, jabki sabse kam galti writer ki hoti hai. Sometimes, a story warrants a ‘mirch masala’ type of a song. Mirch masala is okay. Sarkai Lo Khatiya was that. Lekin Sarkai Lo Khatiya Sanjay Dutt waala gaana nahi tha. Sometimes, a normal song is made to sound vulgar deliberately,” he states.
Calling the CBFC out, Sameer says, “Why did it not get censored? If a regular auto driver is able to decipher how vulgar the song is, did the people at CBFC not understand the double meaning? Legal route lene ka mauka hi kyun diya gaya usko? They chose to ban the song eventually, but you can’t completely erase something from the digital world.”
But Sameer has a bigger concern. According to him, not just song lyrics but also films should come under scrutiny for their use of expletives. “Some of the biggest films and shows have cuss words in the name of dialogues. Is that not vulgarity? Is that not wrong? There may be no regulation on the OTT space but censorship exists in theatrical films,” he remarks.
“So, why do they still have abuses in them? And if dialogues can have cuss words, songs can also have vulgarity in them. What kind of double standards is this? Agar log gaaliyaan sunne ke liye tayyaar hai, toh phir vulgar gaane bhi sunne do. Phir blue films banwa ke release kar do kuch dino ke baad. Woh bhi dekhke do logo ko,” Sameer continues.
Sameer attributes all of this to a radically open-minded society. “There should be strict restrictions on these things. Such songs should never be allowed to release in the first place. What’s the point of banning it and fighting it out when it has already released? Earlier people knew their boundaries but abhi agar saari duniya itni khul gayi hai, toh khulne do!” he says.
