When Christopher Nkunku arrived at Chelsea from RB Leipzig, Blues fans were incredibly optimistic. This was a player who had just scored 58 goals in his last two seasons for the Bundesliga side.
Chelsea are believed to have spent north of £50m on the France international after his stunning form in Germany. The Blues hoped that Nkunku’s time at Chelsea would paint a different story to Timo Werner’s.
Where will Chelsea finish this season? Will they get a European spot?🤔
Werner had also joined the Blues for big money from Leipzig, and ended up flopping. Ultimately, Nkunku did the same, but the Frenchman had little choice – injury limiting him to just 15 games in his first season.
An improvement in the second saw Nkunku show glimpses in a Chelsea shirt, but when Milan came calling, there was only going to be one answer. The former PSG man joined Milan last summer for £36m.
Milan make Nkunku decision after disappointing season
It is quite the trend in Italy for the bigger clubs to sign a striker and a year later, they are on the move. Nkunku is the latest example, with the Frenchman failing to reignite his Leipzig form in a Milan shirt.

Despite the presence of many former Chelsea players in a Milan shirt – including Christian Pulisic, Fikayo Tomori and Ruben Loftus-Cheek – Nkunku has failed prove his big transfer fee in red and black so far.
Clocking up 31 appearances for Milan, Nkunku has scored only six times. He’s managed only three assists and now, the Frenchman is set to leave. TMW say Milan have already placed him on the transfer list.
Why Nkunku struggled at both Chelsea and now Milan
At Leipzig, Nkunku played as a second striker. It saw him earn the freedom and make late runs into the box, scoring plenty of goals. He had the confidence to shoot from distance and took set-pieces, too.
After Christopher Nkunku, Jamie Gittens and Timo Werner, how do you feel about Chelsea signing players from Germany? 🇩🇪
He was a big fish in a smaller pond than the likes of Chelsea and Milan. But at Chelsea, Enzo Maresca could never find his best role and according to reports, it is the same at Milan, under Max Allegri.
Indeed, the secondary striker role is not something that Allegri has managed to work out with Nkunku in his first season at the San Siro. Pulisic’s form up top has limited Nkunku’s game time and a move is likely.
