Mario games aren’t exactly known for their deep stories, as the focus is the gameplay. While still not massive in terms of storytelling, the Mario movies definitely dive a bit deeper into lore for the Mario universe, and it seems we can expect to see that reflected in future games.
SPOILER WARNING!!!
In The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the relationship between Peach and Rosalina is explored. This film goes deeper than the games and changes up some elements, with the biggest reveal being that Peach and Rosalina are sisters. In an interview with NDW, directly responding to the revelations tied to Peach and Rosalina, Shigeru Miyamoto seems to suggest that going forward Mario games will continue to explore this relationship.
Because we don’t know what kind of game we’ll make next with our characters, having too many character settings would become a constraint. I’m fine with being bound by the gameplay, but I don’t want to be bound by having created a story, which has been the reason for not making movies for many years.
So, before making this movie, I hadn’t decided on the character’s background, but now that I’m making the movie, it’s become fun to expand on the character in various ways. Therefore, I would like to adhere as much as possible to the settings created in the movie in future games.
