Matthijs de Ligt has been out of action for over four months and has revealed his latest injury update on social media
Matthijs de Ligt revealed he’s getting closer to a return on the pitch after posting photos of himself training.
The Manchester United defender last played football against Crystal Palace on November 30th and has been out of action ever since. Despite former boss Ruben Amorim initially suggesting the Dutchman would only miss one game with a back injury, De Ligt has been on the sidelines for nearly five months.
However, the 26-year-old has made a huge step in his rehabilitation as he’s now taking part in light individual training on the grass at Carrington, with United confirming the news on Friday.

The Netherlands international took to Instagram to announce his return by posting several pictures of himself running and doing ball exercises with the caption: “Working hard, getting closer”.
The post – which has been liked over 93,000 times so far – has also garnered responses from his teammates with Lisandro Martinez commenting: “Vamos Mata” with a flexed bicep emoji. Joshua Zirkzee commented a single crown emoji while international teammate and Bournemouth star Justin Kluivert added a fire and praying hands emoji in De Ligt’s comments section.
United’s statement regarding De Ligt’s focus on returning to full fitness read: “He is focused on returning to full fitness”, while they stopped short of giving a timeframe of when he could return to competitive action.
Following United’s trip to the Republic of Ireland for a training camp earlier this month, Carrick was asked about De Ligt’s injury situation given he didn’t make the journey. The interim boss clarified: “He’s doing treatment and rehab. He didn’t come [to Ireland] because he’s not quite on the grass.
“Patrick Dorgu came because he’s a little bit further on. Matthijs is not quite at that stage really, so it was important for him to continue his rehab and try to get him back. It’s different treatment and exercises. He’s not quite on the grass yet.
“That’s the process you have to go through when you’re injured. Sometimes it happens quicker for others. He’s just working through that at the moment and we’re trying to get him back.”
Prior to his injury, the defender was in fine form and won United’s player of the month award in November. He’d been ever-present for the club this season, having played every minute in the Premier League.
