Mac mini price hike is the latest sign of how the artificial intelligence boom is reshaping even entry-level desktop computers. Apple has quietly lifted the starting price of its compact Mac mini to 799 dollars, up from 599 dollars, after a surge in AI-related demand drained supplies of cheaper models.
Mac mini price hike tied to AI frenzy
The higher sticker price does not reflect a new processor, but a different baseline configuration. Apple has stopped selling the 256GB version of the Mac mini with its M4 chip, meaning the desktop now starts with 512GB of storage at 799 dollars. The more powerful M4 Pro Mac mini continues to start at 1,399 dollars, unchanged for now.
Behind the Mac mini price hike is a rush of customers using the machine for running local AI and “agentic” tools, according to chief executive Tim Cook. He has described the Mac mini and Mac Studio as “amazing platforms for AI and agentic tools”, and warned it could take several months for supply to catch up with demand.
Mac mini price hike amid wider Mac shortages
The Mac mini price hike lands as Apple grapples with broader Mac shortages and rising memory costs. Higher-capacity configurations have seen long delivery times, and the previous 599-dollar base model has been sold out on Apple’s website, with buyers turning to resellers and marked‑up listings.
Even so, Apple has issued a stronger-than-expected sales forecast, saying overall revenue should rise between 14 and 17 per cent in the current quarter, helped by demand for iPhone and Mac devices. For many customers, though, the Mac mini price hike will reinforce a simple reality: AI’s rapid growth is not just driving new software, it is quietly making the “most affordable Mac” more expensive to buy.
