Google has revealed that users have already created more than 2.5 lakh Android applications through its free AI-powered feature integrated into Google AI Studio, marking a significant shift in how mobile apps are being developed. The announcement was made by Logan Kilpatrick, a member of Google’s Gemini technical staff, who said most users building these apps had never developed Android software before.
“Likely >99% of these folks never built an Android app before, everyone can now build, no coding required,” Kilpatrick wrote on X while discussing the rapid adoption of the tool within a week of launch.
The feature allows users to generate functional Android apps using Gemini-powered prompts instead of manually writing code. Google appears to be targeting students, creators, small businesses and first-time developers looking to build personal or commercial applications without advanced programming skills.
Kilpatrick also highlighted the scale of the Android ecosystem, stating, “Android has over 3 billion active users, and now anyone can build an app for themselves or this 3 billion user audience.”
Google currently allows developers to deploy apps to Play test tracks through AI Studio, while direct Play Store publishing may arrive later this year. The development has also sparked debate online, with some users raising concerns over app discoverability, moderation and quality control for AI-generated applications.
