Gary Neville was really impressed with one Chelsea star in 1-1 draw with Manchester City

There was a bit of a new manager bounce for Chelsea following their 1-1 draw with Manchester City on Sunday.

Calum McFarlane took charge of the Blues following their decision to part ways with Enzo Maresca during the week.

Chelsea have won just once in eight Premier League games after drawing at the Etihad, but they will be happy with their performance against City.

Gary Neville thought Liam Delap was a ‘handful’ against Manchester City

Liam Delap was introduced to the game just after the hour mark, replacing Joao Pedro.

The striker failed to get his name on the scoresheet, but Neville was still impressed with his performance.

After one bit of play, the Manchester United legend said on Sky Sports (04/01/2026 at 19:02): “He’s been good, Delap, since he’s come on. Been a real focal point and a handful. Good pass into him, great touch, just rolls [the defender].”

Since joining Chelsea from Ipswich Town last summer, Delap is yet to score a goal in the English top flight. However, he did find the back of the net in his side’s 3-0 victory over Barcelona in the Champions League.

Delap also scored in Chelsea’s successful Club World Cup campaign, helping the Blues to win the tournament.

Once again, the England Under-21 international showed a lack of discipline after picking up another yellow card. But Neville’s praise was certainly warranted.

Liam Delap could be the perfect striker for Chelsea in away games

Going forward, Delap can be a very useful asset to Chelsea. Yes, he has not scored in the Premier League yet, but injuries have impacted him.

Away from home, he is the kind of footballer you want leading the line. The former Ipswich man is strong and can hold up the ball. He is not the type of centre-forward that centre-backs want to play against.

Right now, Delap is not at the necessary level to take Chelsea to a title, but he still has something to offer.
