In an industry where fame, glamour, and success often define a star’s journey, there are a few stories that take an unexpected turn. One such story is of an actress who once worked with Akshay Kumar and stepped into Bollywood with promising opportunities, only to walk away from it all at the peak of her career. Leaving behind the spotlight and a life many aspire to, former actress Barkha Madan chose a path far from the world of cinema, one of spiritual awakening in the mountains. Her transformation from a rising actress to a monk is as surprising as it is inspiring, making her story one that continues to intrigue fans even today.

Before choosing a spiritual path and becoming Gyalten Samten, Barkha Madan had already made a name for herself in the world of glamour. Born in Punjab in 1970, she began her journey as a model and rose to fame after participating in the 1994 Miss India pageant alongside future icons like Aishwarya Rai and Sushmita Sen. While Sushmita clinched the Miss India crown and Aishwarya emerged as the first runner-up, Barkha stood out by winning the Miss Tourism India title. She went on to represent India at the Miss Tourism International pageant in Malaysia, where she secured the position of third runner-up, marking an impressive start to her career in the spotlight.

Barkha Madan transitioned from modelling to films with her Bollywood debut in Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi (1996), where she shared screen space with Akshay Kumar, Raveena Tandon, and Rekha. The film marked her entry into mainstream cinema and opened doors for further opportunities in the industry.

She later went on to feature in notable projects, including Bhoot, directed by Ram Gopal Varma, where she portrayed a haunting ghostly role. Her performance in the film was widely appreciated, further establishing her versatility as an actor before she eventually stepped away from films.

Despite finding success in the entertainment industry, Barkha Madan felt a deeper inner calling that drew her towards spirituality. Over time, she became profoundly influenced by the teachings of the Dalai Lama, which eventually guided her to embrace Buddhism. In 2012, she took a life-altering step by undergoing ordination as a Buddhist nun, marking her complete departure from the world of cinema. With this transformation, she began a new life dedicated to spiritual practice and simplicity.

Today, Barkha resides in mountain monasteries, and she shares her spiritual journey and wisdom with others on Instagram. The message in her bio reads, “There is no practice higher than bodhicitta, and no protection greater than compassion.”
