YouTube TV expands multiview with custom live channel selection

YouTube TV is rolling out a new multiview customisation feature that allows users to select and combine live programming streams, including sports, news and entertainment channels, into a single viewing screen.

In a post announcing the update, the platform said users will now be able to build custom multiview combinations instead of relying only on pre-selected channel groupings. The feature supports up to four live programs at once without switching channels.

The update also introduces the ability to combine content from different subscription packages. Subscribers to the base YouTube TV plan and add-ons such as NFL Sunday Ticket will be able to include those streams together in one multiview setup.

The new multiview builder includes category filters such as recommended content, sports, news, shows, movies and other live programming to help users navigate available streams.

The feature is limited to live programming and does not currently support video-on-demand or DVR content. Some family-friendly programming will also not be eligible for multiview customisation.

The feature is being rolled out across most living room and mobile devices, though some older devices may support only limited multiview customisation focused on major events such as the NFL and the World Cup.

As per the platform users can create multiview combinations while watching live content by selecting the multiview option and adding available live programs. The service also allows viewers to switch audio feeds, expand a stream to full screen and return to the multiview layout on both smart TVs and mobile devices.

The multiview is not supported on web browsers or through AirPlay, and some features such as key plays, stats and fantasy football integrations are unavailable while using multiview.
