WTA Rome Day 2 Predictions Including Linette vs Maria
The Foro Italico is always one of the most atmospheric stops on the clay swing, and Day 2 of the WTA 1000 in Rome brings four interesting first-round matchups. Rome’s slow, heavy clay rewards patience, good sliding, and the ability to build points carefully. With a mix of recent form, clay experience, and some fresh head-to-head context, these contests look set to deliver some long rallies and tactical battles. As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match on the schedule. But who will advance?
WTA Rome Day 2 Predictions
Peyton Stearns vs Janice Tjen
Head-to-Head: First meeting
Both players sit close in the rankings, Tjen around 40th and Stearns just outside the top 50, so this feels evenly balanced on paper. Stearns has shown she can do damage on clay with that heavy topspin forehand that opens up the court nicely. She won a title earlier this season and made a solid impression at this event last year, proving she handles the conditions well.
Tjen brings a great story as the first Indonesian in years to win a Tour-level title, and she clearly rises to big occasions. However, a recent injury meant she missed some clay tune-ups, leaving her a bit short on match practice on the dirt. Stearns looks like the steadier option in longer rallies here.
Prediction: Stearns in 2
Yulia Putintseva vs Tereza Valentova
Head-to-Head: Putintseva 1-0 Valentova
These two met recently in Madrid, where Putintseva came through a tough three-hour battle. The veteran Russian is a real clay warrior who thrives on variety, scrappy defense, and frustrating opponents in long exchanges. She has loads of experience sliding around European red clay. That said, Valentova heads into Rome with stronger momentum. The 19-year-old Czech reached a WTA 125 final after Madrid and has been climbing the rankings fast with genuine clay-court feel for her age. The slow conditions should suit her ability to sustain pressure. This rematch has three-set written all over it.
Prediction: Valentova in 3
Simona Waltert vs Yuliia Starodubtseva
Head-to-Head: First meeting
Starodubtseva arrives as one of the hotter players on clay right now. She posted a strong 7-2 record on the surface heading into Madrid and reached the Charleston final earlier this season, showing her game translates well to the dirt. She’s been winning matches consistently and carries real belief. Waltert has decent challenger-level results on clay and managed to qualify in Madrid, but her main-draw WTA record on the surface is more modest. There’s always room for an upset when two determined players meet for the first time, but Starodubtseva’s current form and comfort on these conditions give her the advantage.
Prediction: Starodubtseva in 2
Magda Linette vs Tatjana Maria
Head-to-Head: Linette 2-0 Maria
This matchup looks headed one way on recent numbers. Linette sits at 14-10 for the season and picked up a solid first-round win in Madrid. Maria has struggled more, sitting at 6-13 overall, with a tough loss in Rome qualifying or early exit. Their latest meeting in Merida went Linette’s way quite comfortably. Maria’s slice can be tricky on faster courts, but Rome’s slow, heavy clay turns it into less of a weapon and makes long baseline rallies tougher at 38 years old. Linette’s steadier consistency and better recent clay results should help her control the key moments.
Prediction: Linette in 2
