The WTA Rome tournament continues on Wednesday. The first-round main draw began on Tuesday. Wednesday will fill out the rest of the Round of 96 before the top seeds begin their tournament on Thursday and Friday in the Round of 64. Players in the back end of the top 100 and in the lower 100s will try to make crucial gains in rankings points with the French Open not that far away. Viktorija Golubic is ranked No. 90 on the WTA Tour. Federica Urgesi is ranked No. 410. That’s a difference of 320 ranking spots. Yet, Urgesi is the one who comes into this match with some momentum, having won two Rome qualifying matches to get into the main draw. Golubic lost her most recent match and has dropped five of her last seven matches. Do the rankings really tell the story here, or is Urgesi being undervalued as the market underdog?

It’s obvious that there is a large disparity in the rankings between these players, but does Urgesi’s pair of qualifying wins in Rome change the way bettors should think about this match? Urgesi, before coming to Rome for qualifying, was playing challenger-level events. Golubic mostly played regular tour events. Therefore, Golubic’s 2-5 record in her last seven matches doesn’t seem as bad. Urgesi has won more matches in recent weeks, but against weaker competition. Here’s an interesting match for one basic reason: Both players are older veterans on the WTA Tour and yet have never played each other. Leolia Jeanjean is in her early 30s, and Beatriz Haddad Maia will turn 30 at the end of May. They have never played each other on tour. Not once. That is quite a surprise. Jeanjean comes in with a little more momentum, having won two Rome qualifying matches. Haddad Maia has a top-80 ranking and did not have to go through qualifying for this tournament. She lost her most recent match. This is why Jeanjean is priced as the favorite.
Best Bet to Make
This is not as clear-cut as the market prices might suggest. Though Beatriz Haddad Maia has had a difficult 2026 season, she is 3-3 in her last six matches, the same as Jeanjean. It’s not as though Jeanjean has been playing better tennis for a whole month. She has won two matches this week, and that’s not irrelevant, but is she a better tennis player than Haddad Maia? The price for a Haddad Maia win is amazing. If you’re not fully convinced Jeanjean is the better player, the Haddad Maia moneyline is a strong play.
That being said, betting on Haddad Maia winning is a value bet for sure.

Lisa Pigato and Tyra Caterina Grant, two Italian players, go at it in Rome in what should be one of the more fun matches of the day. The atmosphere in the crowd should be electric. Pigato is ranked almost 100 spots higher than Grant, but both players are in good form entering this match. Pigato is 9-1 in her last 10 matches, Grant 8-2. Pigato, being the higher-ranked player and with a lot of recent match wins, might seem to be the obvious favorite, but the markets have this match priced very close to a toss-up.
Best Bet to Make
When a match is priced close to a toss-up, you don’t need to worry about sets or games, just who wins. Pigato’s 9-1 run is impressive, but Grant’s 8-2 record in her last 10 includes two Madrid qualifying wins and a main-draw win as well. Pigato’s last 10 matches have all been at the challenger level. Grant has been playing better competition to get her results. Grant is the choice here.
