Two exciting quarterfinal matches are scheduled on Day 8 of the WTA Mutua Madrid Open. World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka will take on Hailey Baptiste, while in the other quarterfinal, #9 seed Mirra Andreeva faces Canada’s Leylah Fernandez. As always, we at LWOT will offer predictions for both matches, but who will advance to the semifinals?
WTA Madrid Quarterfinal Predictions
Mirra Andreeva vs Leylah Fernandez
Head-to-Head: Andreeva 1-1 Fernandez
Mirra Andreeva defeated Anna Bondar in the fourth round to secure her third consecutive appearance at the Madrid Open quarterfinals. The match got tricky for Andreeva as she let slip a comfortable lead in the third set, but she recovered from it brilliantly to win the tiebreak. She is now 10-1 on clay this season and will be eager to reach the semifinals here for the first time.
Leylah Fernandez showed her quality in Stuttgart and has carried the momentum in Madrid. She easily defeated Ann Li in the fourth round and will make her first quarterfinal appearance at this tournament. This is also her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal since 2024, and she must be confident in her game to beat the #9 seed. However, Andreeva has only lost to Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka in this tournament, and on clay, I will pick her over the Canadian.
Prediction: Andreeva in 3
Aryna Sabalenka vs Hailey Baptiste
Head-to-Head: Sabalenka 1-0 Baptiste
Three-time champion Aryna Sabalenka faced an inspired Naomi Osaka for a set and a half before turning the match around and advancing to the quarterfinal. Sabalenka is now on a 15-match win streak, which ties for a career-best. Hailey Baptiste had six match points against Belinda Bencic in set two, but she eventually got the job done in the third set.
The American was pretty competitive against Sabalenka in Miami recently. It could prove to be another stern test for the World No.1. However, Sabalenka in Miami is a different beast and should come out victorious.
Prediction: Sabalenka in 3
