WTA Madrid Day 6 Predictions Including Gauff vs Cirstea
Day 6 at the WTA Mutua Madrid Open brings some intriguing third-round clashes on the high-altitude clay. Players have had time to settle into the conditions after early matches, and we’re starting to see who is moving well and finding their rhythm on the red dirt before the French Open. As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match on the schedule. But who will advance?
WTA Madrid Day 6 Predictions
Elise Mertens vs Karolina Pliskova
Head-to-Head: Pliskova 3–1 Mertens
Mertens has been one of the most consistent performers on Tour over the past couple of years, grinding out results with smart court positioning and strong doubles-level instincts that translate well to singles. She handled her early match here with ease, dropping very few games. Pliskova, a former World No. 1, brings big serving and flat hitting that can be dangerous on any surface. She has shown in the past that she can produce good tennis on clay when her serve is firing and she finds timing on her groundstrokes. The Czech has been working her way back and looked competitive in recent outings. This should be a tight battle where serving and who controls the baseline rallies better will decide things. Mertens’ steadiness and ability to stay in points longer give her a slight edge in a best-of-three format.
Prediction: Mertens in 3
Jelena Ostapenko vs Anastasia Potapova
Head-to-Head: Ostapenko 2–0 Potapova
Ostapenko can light up the court when she is on, striking the ball cleanly and taking big cuts that generate winners from anywhere. She has a strong clay pedigree from her junior days and occasional deep runs as a pro. Potapova has been in solid form this season, winning a title on indoor hard earlier and showing good movement. She reached this stage after stepping in as a lucky loser and making the most of it. Both women like to be aggressive, so the match could feature plenty of entertaining rallies. Ostapenko’s ability to dictate with her forehand and backhand on clay, combined with her experience in big moments, should help her pull through if she keeps the unforced errors in check.
Prediction: Ostapenko in 2
Linda Noskova vs Liudmila Samsonova
Head-to-Head: Samsonova 2-1 Noskova
Noskova has emerged as one of the most promising young players, with clean technique and power that works well on clay. She has been building steadily this season and looked comfortable in her opening wins here. Samsonova is a strong ball-striker who can hit through the court, and she has shown she can compete on clay when her serve is on song. The Russian has good athleticism and can match Noskova’s pace. This looks like a matchup of two powerful baseliners. Noskova’s slightly better recent consistency and ability to vary her shots should allow her to edge the longer rallies that often develop on Madrid’s clay.
Prediction: Noskova in 3
Coco Gauff vs Sorana Cirstea
Head-to-Head: Gauff 2-0 Cirstea
Cirstea has shown flashes of her best tennis this season, including a solid run that included a title in Linz earlier in the year. The Romanian knows how to construct points on clay and has enough variety to make opponents uncomfortable. She came through a tough qualifying-style test in her previous round here. Gauff, meanwhile, looked sharp in her opening match, winning the last nine games after a slow start. She has been building confidence on clay in recent seasons and moves exceptionally well, allowing her to chase down balls and turn defense into offense. The altitude in Madrid can reward clean ball-striking, and Gauff’s athleticism should help her open up the court more consistently as the match goes on.
Prediction: Gauff in 2
