Born in 2000 in Srinagar, Kashmir, into a Kashmiri Muslim family, Zaira Wasim’s talent took her from the scenic valleys straight into the spotlight.

At just 15, Zaira landed her first role in the 2016 blockbuster Dangal as young Geeta Phogat. Her natural performance in Aamir Khan’s wrestling saga captivated millions.

Guided by Aamir Khan, Zaira trained rigorously for Dangal. Their on-set collaboration shaped one of Bollywood’s most memorable debut performances.

Dangal became one of India’s highest-grossing films. Zaira’s raw talent as the young wrestler helped turn the sports drama into a global phenomenon.

At just 16, Zaira won the prestigious National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for Dangal – a rare honor for a debutant teenager from Kashmir.

Reunited with Aamir Khan in the 2017 film Secret Superstar, Zaira shone as Insia, an aspiring singer. The movie proved her versatility beyond wrestling roles.

With two massive hits, awards, and widespread acclaim, Zaira Wasim was on track for superstardom in Bollywood.

Behind the fame, Zaira felt a growing disconnect. The film industry’s demands began clashing with her personal values and faith.

In June 2019, at age 18, Zaira announced her retirement from acting. She wrote that the environment “consistently interfered with my imaan” and threatened her relationship with her religion.

Zaira chose peace, privacy, and her Islamic faith over stardom. In 2025, she announced her Nikaah (marriage) with heartfelt posts celebrating her new chapter.
