Witcher 3 surpasses 65m lifetime sales as CD Projekt announces third expansion

As CD Projekt announced the third expansion for 2015’s The Witcher 3, the developer reported a slight 6% increase in overall revenue to PLN 191 million ($52.5 million) during its first quarter.

By franchise, Cyberpunk IP revenue declined 4% to PLN 140.1 million ($38.4 million), while Witcher IP revenue rose 36% to PLN 44.7 million ($12.2 million).

The Witcher 3 has surpassed 65 million cumulative sales. Its upcoming expansion Songs of the Past, co-developed with Fool’s Theory, is in advanced development and is expected to launch in 2027.

CD Projekt reported a net profit of PLN 106 million ($29.1 million), down from PLN 111.7 million ($30.7 million) in the previous quarter.

During its first quarter, CD Projekt continued “working to further expand the reach of its franchises.”

The base edition of Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3 – Complete Edition were made available on Xbox Game Pass Premium and Ultimate.

CFO Piotr Nielubowicz noted that including these titles on Game Pass generated a “solid revenue stream.”

“As we carry on with our work, each successive quarter sees an increase in investments on development projects even as we maintain a solid level of cash reserves – PLN 1.4 billion ($384.9 million) at the end of March.

“We are well prepared to further intensify our parallel development work on several projects in the context of our excellent franchise.”

Joint CEO Michał Nowakowski added: “Being part of various distribution channels, and publishing updates for the newest hardware enable us to continue expanding our player base, and broadening the availability of our games.”

The developer also provided insight into its standard game production cycle, which ranges from three to six years.

“Historically, the studio focused on the development of one major production, with conceptual work on the next game starting even before the production and market release of the previous game was completed,” it said.

“At the moment, the CD Projekt studio is working in parallel on several productions (also in collaboration with external development teams) and supporting products, which is expected to translate into shorter periods between releases of subsequent titles in the future.”
