Weekly poll: Nothing Phone (4a) and Phone (4a) Pro await your approval

Posted on

Despite branching into the lower and higher-end segments, Nothing is still primarily a mid-ranger company. The fourth generation started shipping this week with the vanilla model, though the Pro is only now starting its pre-order phase.

The Nothing Phone (4a) closes the all-important camera gap with a 50MP 3.5x/80mm telephoto module. In fact, its camera is almost identical to that of the (4a) Pro – last year, the superior camera hardware was a major reason to pay the Pro premium.

This year, the two models differ mainly on build and performance. The vanilla (4a) will not see a huge performance jump from the (3a) – yes, it uses faster storage, but UFS 3.1 isn’t the fastest and the Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 is only marginally better than the 7s Gen 3. This model also uses older LPDDR4X RAM.

The Nothing Phone (4a) Pro has an aluminum frame, a first for the a-series. With this and the Glyph Matrix display on the back, it looks more like last year’s Phone (3) flagship than an a-series model. The regular (4a) has a plastic build, but it still feels solidly built (check out our in for review post for a closer look).

The other thing that the Pro has is a Snapdragon 7 Gen 4. This brings a more tangible upgrade to performance (especially in graphics). It helps that the chipset is connected to faster LPDDR5X RAM and a vapor chamber for cooling.

There are a few other differences, but the build and the chipset will be the key factors when deciding between the Nothing Phone (4a) and the (4a) Pro. The Glyph designs are quite different – the (4a) has a simple bar, while the (4a) Pro has a dot-matrix display – but we feel that only hardcore Nothing fans care about those. Are we wrong?
