Former India captain Virat Kohli’s brother, Vikas, has taken a sly dig at the current men’s Test team. In a brief post on the social media platform Threads, he mentioned how ‘there was a time’ when India played to win in overseas conditions and is now ‘playing to save the match, even in India’.

He then went on to blame it on someone who, according to him, is trying to ‘boss around and change things’ that were never broken. Fans on social media felt it was a clear dig at Gautam Gambhir, the head coach, and the common factor in the team’s struggles over the past couple of years.

Vikas wrote: “There was a time that we played to win even in overseas conditions… Now we are playing to save the match…even in India.. This is what happens when u try to boss around and change things unnecessary which were not broken…. (sic)”

His comments came close on the heels of India’s struggles in the ongoing two-Test series against South Africa at home. The hosts lost the first Test in Kolkata by 30 runs and ended the fourth day of the second match in Guwahati on the verge of a series defeat.

After taking a 288-run lead in the first innings, South Africa piled on the Indian misery, declaring at 260/5 and then getting two wickets before Stumps, leaving India needing 522 runs on the final day. Even if the hosts manage to draw the Test, they’d lose the series 1-0.

If it’s a whitewash, Gambhir will become the only coach in Indian Test history to suffer two home clean-sweeps. Even if it’s a 1-0 defeat, his record will have two home series defeats out of four, and an overall nine Test losses in 18 matches, with only seven wins.

It needs to be noted that Gambhir has overseen a huge transition in the Indian team. However, he hasn’t helped himself with the poor team selections, constant changing of the 11s and batting orders, and not learning from the mistakes committed over the past few months.
