Toyota to build new 100,000-units-a-year car factory in Maharashtra

Toyota Motor Corporation will build a new Toyota Kirloskar Motor factory in Maharashtra with an annual production capacity of 100,000 vehicles, as the Japanese automaker looks to expand its manufacturing base in India and surrounding regions.

The new plant will come up in the Bidkin Industrial Area in Maharashtra and is scheduled to begin production in the first half of 2029. The facility will have an annual production capacity of 100,000 vehicles and is expected to employ around 2,800 people at the start of operations. The plant will include stamping, welding, painting and assembly operations and will manufacture a new SUV model.

Toyota said the new factory will help the company strengthen its production structure and respond to future demand growth and market changes in India and surrounding regions. The automaker added that the facility will supply vehicles to customers in India as well as nearby markets.

“Toyota’s business in India has progressed together with those who pioneered the Indian market, with Toyota receiving invaluable learning and support from those pioneers,” Toyota said in a statement.

“With deep appreciation, Toyota will continue strengthening its production structure to enable flexible response to future demand growth and market changes in India and surrounding regions, and to deliver products in a timely manner that customers choose,” the company further said.

Toyota also said the project will contribute to the development of India’s automotive industry and local communities. The company stated, “Through the new plant, and with the continued support of many stakeholders and local communities, Toyota will continue to contribute to the development of India’s automotive industry and society.”
