Since Liam Rosenior’s sacking, Chelsea have been linked with several managers, including Andoni Iraola, Xabi Alonso and Marco Silva.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Chelsea are in talks with Iraola as they look to replace Rosenior.

However, it is another name who could be about to become the frontrunner for the vacancy in the Stamford Bridge dugout.

Xabi Alonso emerging as main candidate for Chelsea job

At one stage, Alonso did not look like an option for Chelsea, even though the 44-year-old is currently out of work.

Alonso has been without a job since being dismissed by Real Madrid back in January.

However, according to TyC Sports, Alonso is now emerging as the main contender for the Chelsea job in a development that is likely to delight Blues supporters.

After Rosenior’s struggles, Chelsea fans want a high-profile name who has experience and won trophies. Alonso is still quite young, but he already has those things after winning the Bundesliga title with Bayer Leverkusen in 2024.

Chelsea supporters also want the club to sign more experienced players, and they could get their wish with that as well. It is thought that Chelsea will target footballers with experience, maturity and character this summer.

What system Xabi Alonso could use at Chelsea

At Leverkusen, Alonso used a back three and had great success with it, so that is something that fans could see if he does join Chelsea.

With his system, Leverkusen were able to go the entire 2023/24 Bundesliga season unbeaten as they went on to win the German league title.

Chelsea have struggled defensively in the Premier League this term, so moving to a back three could help them to improve there in the 2026/27 campaign.

However, Alonso used a back four at Real Madrid, so there is a good chance that he goes with a 4-2-3-1 at Stamford Bridge, for example. Whatever the Spaniard uses, Chelsea fans will just be happy to see a manager of his calibre in the dugout.
