Whilst a new story-driven DLC has been announced for The Witcher 3 11 years after its release, the next game in the series may not receive any such expansions at all. This was revealed by CD Projekt RED co-chairman Michał Nowakowski at a press conference on the company’s financial results, reports GamesRadar.
It’s not hard to guess the reasons behind this situation: CDPR plans to release three games in the series over the next few years, whilst also preparing other projects, such as the new Cyberpunk and a game set in its own original universe. It would be difficult to squeeze anything else into this schedule, and Michał Nowakowski confirmed this.
“Specifically, it’s to release three Witcher games within a six-year period. It would be difficult, to be very honest, for us to add an expansion to the upcoming trilogy. This is where we are here and now with this particular issue,” said Nowakowski.
The Witcher 3 is probably one of the most supported games in the world. In the year following its release, it received two massive story expansions. The ‘Hearts of Stone’ DLC added a major storyline and significantly expanded the game’s map, whilst ‘Blood and Wine’ effectively became a separate, full-scale game set in a new, vibrant location. In 2022, a next-gen update was released for The Witcher 3, featuring support for modern graphics technologies and additional content. The major expansion ‘The Old Song’ is due to be released in 2027.
The lack of large chunks of additional content for The Witcher 4 may be disappointing. However, players will instead receive two more full-fledged games in the series, so there will be no need to feel bored without their favourite fantasy universe. Work is also likely continuing on a remake of the first “Witcher”.
