The Biggest Manicure Color Trend For Winter 2026

The beginning of a new year often has us wanting to try new things, and that goes for even the littlest choices such as nail color. Choosing a winter manicure should be about seasonality, and I’ve grown a bit tired of seeing the same barely-there neutrals even during the brief months in the South when we get to lean into cozy weather and winter activities.

Instead, I’m happy to see while perusing Pinterest and other social media that a particularly rich shade seems to be heading up the nail trends for winter. It’s not new, nor totally unexpected, but I do think it’s an underrated classic. Here’s why dark red, á la my beloved OPI Malaga Wine, is poised to be the best winter manicure shade.

Ultimate Manicure Color For Winter 2026

While bright cherry-red nails are a forever classic going back decades, I’m seeking justice for dark red, which enjoys some of the same passion and longevity, but only during a few months per year. Call it merlot, currant, burgundy, or berry—the names run the gamut, but the flattering pop remains better than any other winter shade.

Dark red nails feel a bit more elevated than your basic true red, which can veer almost pink or coral at times, especially during cold-weather months when you’re often donning layers of darker clothes. It’s easy to pair, versatile, and so much more interesting that going with the same barely-there neutral you wear all year long.

Why People Love This Shade

While winter is always a time when more moody shades are trending, heading into winter 2026 I’m noticing an appreciation on social media for darker shades that still boast a vibrance—including royal navy, pine green, and oxblood red.

Dark red, if you choose the proper hue, does just that. It still offers a pop of color, but with an understated “cool factor.” Amongst the taupes and pale pinks, it stands out. Plus, it always tends to remind me of my grandmother who was practically allergic to donning any boring nail color and went with some variation of red at almost every salon visit.

Which Shade To Choose

I’ve reached for OPI’s perfectly balanced Malaga Wine for over a decade, and our readers haven’t been shy about their absolute love for OPI’s slightly pearlescent I’m Not Really A Waitress. Other iconic dark reds, such as Essie’s true wine red Bordeaux and OPI’s ultra-dark Black Cherry Chutney, also show the versatility of a dark red mani. These shades all differ in finish and tone, but achieve the most perfect winter manicure that you’ll return to again and again.
