The title-winning Ibrox boss was on the cusp of a return to the Glasgow giants in October
Honest Steven Gerrard admits he may not return to management after passing on the “perfect” job at Rangers.
Ahead of Danny Rohl being named Russell Martin’s successor in October, Gerrard was locked in talks with chairman Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe of 49ers Enterprises. However, he walked away from a blockbuster return to the Glasgow giants after several rounds of discussions.
The Liverpool icon earned hero status during his time in the Ibrox dugout after he ended Celtic’s stranglehold on the Scottish Premiership title in 2021. Since then, Gerrard has endured disappointing spells at Aston Villa and in the Saudi Pro League with Al-Ettifaq.
Gerrard insists he is in no rush to become a boss again, conceding that he has to pick the “right” job after two ill-fated stints as boss. Speaking to The Smiths Brothers podcast about what he is up to currently, Gerrard said: “I’ve been busy-ish. Loads of free time with the family, with the granddaughter coming.
“Trying to be around as much as we can, that is the reason we have moved home. Sort of unofficially with TNT doing the games for the Champions League and Premier League – they are being really helpful with me saying I can pick and choose my games because of my family situation.
“So, trying to stay local with the Premier League games and just the odd Champions League. Then, endorsement stuff – a little bit in the Far East, meet and greets, that type of stuff. Spoke to a couple of clubs, opportunities that have come up on the phone and unfortunately nothing (is) there at the moment.
“I am comfortable and easy with that. I am not looking for a job or steaming for a job. After the last two I do have to make sure it’s the right one.”
Gerrard has been out of work since leaving Ettifaq in January after just 18 months in the hot seat – with the club battling in the lower reaches of the Pro League. The 45-year-old states that he wants a “passionate” crowd and the chance to claim silverware in his next job.
And if the offer doesn’t come, he concedes he may not be back: “I think I suit a certain job; the passionate crowd – I need to try and feed off that. Something has to match my skillset, if you know what I mean.
“I am looking for the right match. Rangers was perfect, I was really close to going up there again. It’s just the timing and a few other situations that weren’t aligned.
“Rangers is my type of club – the fans, the passion, you can feed off it. It certainly suits the way that I go about it, but if something doesn’t come or something where I feel like I can compete for the prizes I am comfortable to do what I am doing.”
