Originally released in 2009, Steins;Gate is one of the most influential visual novels ever made. The story follows self-proclaimed “mad scientist” Rintaro Okabe and his group of friends in Akihabara after they accidentally discover a method of sending messages through time using a modified microwave. Starting out as small experiments, the story spirals into conspiracies, timeline shifts, and increasingly dangerous consequences.
The game became a breakout hit thanks to its story featuring elements of science fiction, psychological drama, and emotional character writing. It later expanded into one of MAGES.’ biggest multimedia franchises, spawning sequels, spin-offs, manga, films, stage plays, and anime adaptations.
Steins;Gate is also part of the larger Science Adventure series, which includes titles such as Chaos;Head, Robotics;Notes, Chaos;Child, and Anonymous;Code. While each entry tells a separate story, they share themes involving science, technology, conspiracies, and alternate realities.
The anime adaptation of Steins;Gate by White Fox aired in 2011 and is still widely considered one of the strongest sci-fi anime of the last decade. It was followed by Steins;Gate 0 in 2018, which explored an alternate timeline.
Steins;Gate Re:Boot launches in Japan on August 20.
