Star Fox designer “choked up” by graphics in new Nintendo Switch 2 remake

Ever since it was announced, Star Fox has been drawing plenty of attention thanks to its unusually realistic visuals – a style not often associated with Nintendo titles. The impressive presentation has already left many fans eager to see more of the game ahead of its June 25 launch on Nintendo Switch 2.

As of this week, players have been able to get a closer look at the title through a demo released on the Nintendo eShop. Alongside that release, additional details were also revealed regarding the team behind the project, with development being handled by the newly formed Velan Studios.

The game’s visual presentation has received significant praise from fans, and one person who also had positive things to say was original Star Fox graphic designer Takaya Imamura. In a post shared on his official X account, Imamura praised the remake’s visuals and reflected on how far the series has come technologically.

Commenting on the remake, Imamura explained that during the Nintendo 64 era, the team really struggled to get people to understand the difference between pre-rendered footage and real-time CG”.

With Star Fox on Nintendo Switch 2, Imamura believes the remake has effectively crossed the boundary between pre-rendered and real-time visuals. Thanks to its custom-built engine, the game now resembles a feature film from its cutscenes to its gameplay, and the original designer expressed his satisfaction with the new direction.

“With Star Fox 64, we aimed for demo scenes and staging that wouldn’t look shabby next to pre-rendered stuff, all while chasing the unique appeal that only real-time could deliver,” he said. “In that sense, this latest graphics upgrade really gets me choked up.”
