Spotify launches ‘About the Song’ to showcase stories behind your favourite tracks
There is almost always a story behind a song, but finding them all in one place can be a challenge. Spotify is rolling out a new feature called ‘About the Song’ which allows users to explore these stories, the company said in a statement.
The new feature, currently in beta, presents stories and context directly within the listening experience. Available in the ‘Now Playing’ view, ‘About the Song’ offers short, swipeable story cards that explore the meaning behind the music you are hearing. The stories are pulled from third-party sources to highlight interesting details and behind-the-scenes moments.
The text is powered by machine learning, but sources for the stories are cited. This is Spotify’s latest experiment to offer more features surrounding music streaming. The platform started offering expanded ‘Song Credits’ and ‘SongDNA’ late last year, which offer information about the creators behind songs and show connections between them. The company purchased WhoSampled in November 2025, giving it access to a rich database of sample credits that it can use as part of SongDNA and ‘About the Song’.
“Music fans know the feeling: a song stops you in your tracks, and you immediately want to know more,” Spotify said in a statement. “What inspired it, and what’s the meaning behind it? We believe that understanding the craft and context behind a song can deepen your connection to the music you love.”
‘About the Song’ (beta) is rolling out on mobile (iOS and Android) in English for Premium users in the UK, the US, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and Australia.
To access the feature whilst listening in the Spotify mobile app, open the ‘Now Playing’ view. Next, scroll down to find the ‘About the Song’ card on supported tracks. Swipe through to explore the stories behind the track.
Earlier in the week, Spotify made lyric translations available worldwide and introduced the ability to view lyrics offline for all users. Additionally, Spotify announced updates for its audiobook business this week, specifically its expansion into physical books. Users in the UK and the US will soon be able to purchase physical copies of their favourite audiobooks directly through the app.
