‘Single White Female’ Remake With Ortega & Russell Gets Title, Writer
EXCLUSIVE: After her film Bodies Bodies Bodies earned strong reviews, writer Sarah DeLappe has been set to pen the script for 3000 Pictures’ Single Female, with Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell to star in the remake of the 1990s box office hit Single White Female.
Insiders also tell Deadline that Stacey Sher and Marisa Paiva will produce alongside Ortega and Russell.
The original 1992 film starred Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh and followed a woman who begins to suspect strange and sinister things about her new roommate moving into the apartment. The film was not only a surprise hit but turned its leads into stars.
Besides DeLappe joining as writer, the producer additions are a sign the studio is considering the project a high priority. Sher is no stranger to producing high-profile projects with past credits including Contagion and the Oscar-nominated Django Unchained. She most recently produced the A24 horror thriller Heretic. For Paiva, this marks her first major producing job after spending the past two decades as a respected studio exec.
DeLappe is an award-winning playwright and screenwriter best known for her work tackling young female relationship dynamics. She wrote the screenplay for A24’s 2022 horror comedy Bodies Bodies Bodies, which was both a critical and commercial success. Her play The Wolves received the American Playwriting Foundation’s inaugural Relentless Award and was a finalist for the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. She is repped by CAA, Entertainment 360 and Schreck Rose.
Ortega plays Wednesday Addams in the Netflix series Wednesday with director Tim Burton at the helm. The series is currently in production on Season 3. Up next, she has Taika Waititi’s Klara and the Sun which will be released by Sony, as well as Warner Bros’ The Great Beyond directed by JJ Abrams which will hit theaters in November. She is repped by CAA and Jackoway Austen.
Russell will star next in Hope, the anticipated Korean thriller from director Na Hong-jin. Russell recently made her stage debut in Jamie Lloyd’s revival of Lucy Prebble’s The Effect, which had runs in both London and New York. Her breakout role came in Luca Guadagnino’s 2022 drama Bones and All, where she starred opposite Timothée Chalamet. She is repped by UTA and Lichter, Grossman.
