ChatGPT will retire GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini and OpenAI o4-mini from its consumer platform on February 13, 2026, alongside the previously announced retirement of GPT-5 Instant and GPT-5 Thinking, according to a statement from OpenAI. There will be no changes to model availability in the API at this stage.
The company said that most users have already shifted to GPT-5.2, with only 0.1 per cent of daily users still selecting GPT-4o. The decision, it added, allows it to focus development on models that see the highest use.
Why GPT-4o lasted longer
GPT-4o was initially deprecated but later restored after feedback from a section of Plus and Pro users. Those users said they needed more time to transition key workflows, including creative ideation, and preferred GPT-4o’s conversational style.OpenAI said that this feedback influenced the development of GPT-5.1 and GPT-5.2, which include changes to personality, tools for creative work and options to customise tone and warmth. Users can now choose from base styles, such as Friendly, and adjust how ChatGPT responds.
With these features now available, OpenAI said that the need to keep GPT-4o active has reduced.
Broader changes underway
The company said it is continuing work on areas users have flagged, including reducing unnecessary refusals and overly cautious responses. Updates addressing these issues are expected soon.
OpenAI also said it is moving towards a version of ChatGPT designed for adults over 18, aimed at expanding user choice within safeguards. As part of this effort, it has rolled out age prediction for users under 18 in most markets.
OpenAI acknowledged that the retirement of GPT-4o may frustrate some users but said retiring older models is necessary to support ongoing improvements.
