‘Sentimental Value’s Elle Fanning On ‘Margo’s Got Money Troubles’

Monday morning marked Elle Fanning’s fourth ever Golden Globe nomination, this time for her role of Hollywood movie star Rachel Kemp in Joachim Trier‘s family drama Sentimental Value.

In a conversation with Deadline following the announcement, Fanning revealed details of her next project, Margo’s Got Money Troubles, the television adaptation of Rufi Thorpe’s novel — citing the fact that it shot at universal Studios and her hope that more projects will shoot in LA.

“I got to shoot in Los Angeles which we haven’t done in a while,” she said, exclaiming, “bring the work to LA!”

Margo’s Got Money Troubles is produced by A24 and will debut sometime next year on Apple TV+. Fanning’s Margo is a young single mother who turns to OnlyFans for money, using advice from her ex-pro wrestler father Jinx (Nick Offerman).

Of working on the show Fanning said, “The book is so brilliant and heartwarming. I got to produce it with David E. Kelley and Michelle [Pfeiffer] and Nicole [Kidman], which was just the most wonderful experience. I hope people really enjoy the show. It’s a family drama, but there’s also, again, it’s very heartwarming and Margo is such a hopeful character. She’s dealt these hardships in life, but somehow she always is able to overcome them. And I think she was really inspiring to play because of that and, and the world is just very specific and very fun.”

Speaking on her Globe nomination for Sentimental Value, Fanning said she had really relished the “emotional, deep themes” in Trier’s film. “I think it’s also translated on screen, but Joachim does that with such a light touch and you can feel that kind of air, as Stellan (Skarsgård) likes to call, it’s like a soufflé, but we are dealing with a lot of trauma, and it felt like that on set that we were all kind of going through this catharsis or these emotions, and he creates this environment for you to be able to be vulnerable and share these deep emotions. But it’s so fun and light on set, and almost silly or goofy. You have to be able to have that lightness to then go to the dark places.”

Fanning recalled her favorite scene from the film was opposite Skarsgård. He plays famed director Gustav Borg, who, in trying to reconnect with his daughters Nora (Renata Reinsve) and Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas) has written a screenplay. When Nora refuses the lead role, Borg brings in a famous American actress (Fanning) to play the part instead.

“I think that the scene that I did with Stellan at the end, when Rachel Kemp, my character, walks away from the role. That was my last day on set. So that was my last scene that I filmed… I just remember I was so emotional driving to set that morning and I couldn’t really pinpoint why I was getting so emotional. I was nervous and my heart was pounding and almost telepathically, Joachim knew to come to my trailer. He knocked on my door and he set the tone of you’re going to have all the time in the world to do this scene, which is the beauty of him. Somehow you never feel rushed or that there’s not enough time. He just gives you such space. And he really calmed me and I got to share that experience with Stellan and he’s is so brilliant.”

She added, “What I love about acting is that you get to live out these emotions through your characters that maybe you can’t in real life. And that’s definitely one of the reasons that I love it. But it just felt very deep and emotional and so connected on set and with the crew. Everyone is just one breathing entity.”

Sentimental Value snagged a total of eight nominations — only One Battle After Another is ahead in the film race with nine — and Sentimental Value‘s list included Best Picture – Drama, Best Director, Best Screenplay and acting noms for Reinsve, Skarsgård and Lilleaas, in addition to Fanning’s.

Previously, Fanning was Globe-nominated three times for her role in Hulu’s beloved comedy series The Great.

She is also set to star alongside her sister Dakota Fanning in the Kristen Hannah novel adaptation, The Nightingale which is also co-produced by the Fannings and set for release in early 2027.
