Ruben Amorim calls up Godwill Kukonki to Man Utd training

It feels like an era has gone by, but it was just one year that Amorim walked through the gates of Carrington and immediately took a fancy to Godwill Kukonki.

Just 16 at the time, Kukonki was called up by Amorim to first-team training and even praised publicly by the manager, including a place in the matchday squad last season vs Man City.

As the results snowballed, all plans to debut a raw prospect like that were shelved, and eventually, Kukonki’s name got erased when talking about potential debutants.

The United wonderkid is blessed with towering physical tools, already standing at 6’5″ and growing.

Since that first call-up at 16, he has developed his game with the U18s and the U21s, and Amorim seems to have rewarded that commitment by bringing him back into the first-team fold.

As per the latest training video posted by Man Utd, Kukonki can be seen alongside the likes of Lacey and Fletcher taking part in first-team training.

It remains to be seen whether it’s in preparation for his first-team debut or a soft relaunch of the player’s first-team prospects, but it’s nevertheless a step up from where he was at the start of the season.

Amorim will trust youngsters in a settled team

Amorim ruffled some feathers this season with some ill-advised remarks on United youngsters, but his larger vision is coming to life.

He always maintained that debuts would not be handed out, and the youngsters would not be seen as saviours of the club in a difficult moment.

He wanted them to come into a team that empowered them, instead of relying on them, and as his tactical vision takes shape, he’ll throw in more youngsters.

Lacey and Fletcher have both fared admirably, in terms of mentality if nothing else, and the same will be true for the next youngster he debuts.

There are far more challenging teams for Kukonki to debut against than Wolves, who are on track to have the worst Premier League campaign of all time.
