Wilson has spoken about the club’s transfer plans in a briefing with reporters
Newcastle United sporting director Ross Wilson has said it is ‘highly likely’ there is more value in the transfer market when shopping for targets outside of the Premier League.
And Wilson, who joined the club as sporting director from Nottingham Forest back in October, has confirmed it is ‘something we’ll be looking into’ in future transfer markets.
Newcastle have tried to sign ‘Premier League ready’ players in the past and four of the six first team signings in the summer were signed from teams in the English top flight.
Eddie Howe has spoken about the importance of that Premier League experience when it comes to recruitment but it is perhaps telling that the two best performing summer signings this season – Nick Woltemade and Malick Thiaw – were signed from clubs in Germany and Italy.
Particularly in the case of Thiaw, who was signed for £34.6million from AC Milan, Newcastle look to have found a defensive gem for a snip of a transfer fee.
That has to be the model for Wilson, whose recruitment record at the City Ground was excellent, to try and replicate moving forward and he has also confirmed they have already expanded the club’s recruitment network during his first two months at the club.
“I think it’s always easy to judge recruitment in the past,” Wilson told reporters alongside CEO David Hopkinson at a press briefing after Monday’s supporter engagement event at St James’ Stack.
“I’ve been there myself. I think you’ve always got to judge recruitment with the context of time and what the need is at that specific time.
“Obviously, this club has been on a really interesting journey in recent times, from a relegation battle to a Champions League club, and that requires different things in different moments.
“That’s the first thing I would say. The second thing I would say is that the club had to navigate a really difficult period in the summer with Paul [Mitchell, former sporting director] moving on right at the end of last season or maybe a month later.
“They were operating without a sporting director in place. Obviously I couldn’t be here because I was still part of my previous club’s plans for that summer transfer window which was important there, and I respected that.
“Darren [Eales, former CEO] had to step away as well at the same time, so that wasn’t easy. But the club ultimately navigated that in a way that’s got us the squad we’ve got now, and there’s been some excellent acquisitions that have come from that summer period. Moving forward, we definitely want to expand our recruitment network.
“We’ve already done that, to be honest, in my time here. We’ve already expanded the recruitment network. We’ll continue to do so as we move forward.
“I think it’s also clear that we feel that it’s highly likely, not always, but highly likely that there’ll be more value outside of the Premier League than there is in it. It’s not always the case, but I think it would be a fair assumption to say that’s something we’ll be looking into.”
Wilson also admitted that Newcastle’s use of data in their football operations was ‘way behind’ what he has seen elsewhere but the recent appointment of technical director Sudarshan Gopaladesikan, who leads the club’s football data operations, has seen them make important strides in that department.
“We have to strengthen all the pillars we have in football operations. We have to invest in them all,” Wilson added.
“David used the example of data on the stadium side of things, I could say the same on the football side. The data side was way behind what I’ve seen elsewhere.
“Obviously, we’ve made an appointment in recent times, and that’s already helping us up our game right now. But we have to make that all the areas in the delivery of elite football operation are improved and enhanced all the time.”
