Reggie Fils-Aimé says Nintendo never wanted to have mass layoffs, as it wasn’t in “Nintendo’s DNA”

Reggie Fils-Aimé hasn’t been a part of Nintendo in quite some time, but his efforts and accomplishments within the company are felt to this day. Reggie is no doubt Nintendo’s most popular president with fans, and it seems some of his decisions behind the scenes made him quite well-liked with employees as well.

In recent years we’re seeing all sorts of massive layoffs at game companies the world over, yet Nintendo hasn’t had that happen. When you take a step back and look at Nintendo’s history as a whole, there really haven’t been any instances of Nintendo firing thousands of employees to restructure, at least to the degree we regularly see in the industry nowadays. Thanks to some fresh insight from Reggie Fils-Aimé we now know why that is.

Speaking at New York University, Reggie Fils-Aimé noted that Nintendo never wanted to be in the unfortunate situation of having to let thousands of employees go, which is why they decided to stay away from mass hiring sprees. Nintendo’s method to hiring has clearly paid off, and while Reggie may have been the one to fine-tune that approach, Nintendo continues that path to this day.
