Trent Alexander-Arnold’s first season at Real Madrid certainly hasn’t gone the way he or his club would have hoped following his much-vaunted move away from Liverpool.

While things aren’t exactly going well for the Reds, their former vice-captain isn’t having the best of times out in the Spanish capital either. A turbulent week for Real ended in the worst possible fashion for them as Barcelona wrapped up the La Liga title with victory in El Classico.

Goals from Marcus Rashford and Ferran Torres saw Hansi Flick’s side crowned champions, and confirmed that their biggest rival would end the season without a trophy.

That’s not how Alexander-Arnold would have envisaged things when he decided to swap Anfield for the Bernabeu, and the 27-year-old didn’t cover himself in glory against Barcelona.

Fans have been sharing a video from Sunday’s game which doesn’t paint Alexander-Arnold in a great light. The clip comes from the second half at the Nou Camp, with Barca on the attack with just minutes remaining in the game.

Alexander-Arnold can be seen jogging slowly back to his own penalty area, despite Fermin Lopez sprinting clear and being left in acres of space as he called for his teammates to pass to him. Only when Frenkie de Jong passes to Robert Lewandowski does the England international finally start running, with his blushes spared as the eventual shot deflects for a corner.

It’s something that Liverpool fans will be all too familiar with, given Alexander-Arnold did frustrate at times at Anfield with his defensive efforts, and it seems there are still major questions on that.

However, with Real gearing up for a what will be a big summer, it seems that Alexander-Arnold’s future at the club is safe for now.

According to Spanish outlet AS, the England international is one of four players viewed as “definite keeps” in defense, along with Antonio Rudiger, Dean Huijsen and Alvaro Carreras.

There could be changes elsewhere though, especially in midfield after Fede Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni’s bust-up in training.

Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho is still being eyed up for a return as manager, with Alvaro Arbeloa looking set to be replaced, having stepped in following Xabi Alonso’s firing in January.

The ball is said to be in Mourinho’s court, with Real president Florentino Perez ready to hand the reins back over to him. The 63-year-old though is weighing up whether he is ready for “one last dance”, with the knowledge that the current squad – including Alexander-Arnold – will form the spine of the club’s team for next season.
