Ranveer Singh Was Trolled For Mimicking Kantara’s Iconic Chaundi Sequence, Video Goes Viral

Ranveer Singh has found himself in the middle of an unexpected storm after a light-hearted moment on stage at IFFI Goa turned into a full-blown controversy online. What began as a fun exchange with Kantara director Rishab Shetty quickly snowballed into a social media backlash, forcing the actor to issue a public apology on Instagram.

Ranveer’s IFFI act on Kantara that upset fans

During a session at IFFI, Ranveer broke into an imitation of the popular Chaundi moment from Kantara. He referred to the character as a “female ghost”, crossed his eyes, stuck his tongue out, and added his own “primordial scream” as Rishab Shetty laughed beside him.

He even joked, “Anybody here want to see me in Kantara 3? Tell this guy,” pointing at Shetty.

But the clip hit social media within minutes — and the reaction was far from amused.

Many fans called it disrespectful, especially towards a character rooted in local culture and faith.

Comments poured in like, “Ranveer’s reaction to the Kantara scene really felt unnecessary and disrespectful.” “Making fun of the GOD. You will see what happens with #Dhurander Mr Ranveer Singh.” “Ranveer should start acting like an A list actor not chapri in public…”

Ranveer Singh apologises to Rishab Shetty fans

After hours of trolling, Ranveer posted an apology note on his Instagram Stories. It read, “I intended to highlight Rishabh’s incredible performance in the film. Actor to actor, I know how much it would take to perform that particular scene in the way that he did, for which he has my utmost admiration. I have always deeply respected every culture, tradition and belief in our country. If I’ve hurt anyone’s sentiments, I sincerely apologise.”

Why the Chaundi scene is culturally sensitive

In Kantara, Chaundi appears during one of the film’s most intense and spiritually rooted sequences, portrayed as Guliga Daiva’s fierce and protective sister. The scene blends ritual movement, trance-like energy and coastal folklore, making it deeply significant within Tulu and Bhoota Kola traditions. Her presence represents divine rage and ancestral spirit, which is why many viewers consider any mockery of the portrayal disrespectful.

Ranveer Singh will headline Dhurandhar next, which also stars Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal and Sara Arjun. The Aditya Dhar directorial is slated for a theatrical release on December 5.
