Director S. S. Rajamouli’s wish has finally come true. During the launch of the Varanasi glimpse, the filmmaker had openly expressed his desire to see an IMAX screen in Hyderabad, calling it surprising that the home of Tollywood lacked a premium large-format theatre despite producing some of India’s biggest cinematic spectacles.
Now, ahead of Varanasi’s release, that dream is becoming a reality. As per the latest announcement, IMAX is set to make a major comeback to Hyderabad through a partnership with AMB Cinemas and Asian Cinemas.
The development is being seen as a significant milestone for Telugu cinema, which has increasingly embraced large-scale, visually ambitious productions.
The timing could not have been better for Varanasi, Rajamouli’s globe-trotting adventure starring Mahesh Babu. The film is being mounted on a massive scale and is expected to be one of the biggest visual spectacles in Indian cinema. An IMAX release will allow audiences to experience the film as intended.
The impact extends beyond Varanasi. Several upcoming big-canvas projects, including Raaka, Kalki 2, and the much-discussed God of War adaptation, if it materializes, could also benefit from IMAX screens in the Telugu states.
For years, Telugu audiences had to travel outside the state for a true IMAX experience. With Hyderabad finally joining the global IMAX network, Tollywood’s biggest filmmakers now have the perfect platform to showcase their grand visions on the biggest possible screen.
