Obsession had a phenomenal second Saturday at the Indian box office, collecting Rs. 8 crore approx yesterday. To put that into perspective, the film had opened to just Rs. 1.60 crore on its first day, and now, on its ninth day in release, it has grossed five times that. The week-on-week trend is simply extraordinary, with collections soaring 150 per cent over last Saturday.
The film recorded its biggest day of the run so far, comfortably surpassing the Rs. 3.70 crore it collected on the first Sunday. That record is going to be short-lived, as the film is set for another jump today based on the advances.
The nine-day running total now stands at Rs. 34 crore / USD 3.55 million approx. The second weekend is heading towards a finish of Rs. 20.50-21 crore approx, which would be more than 225 per cent higher than the first weekend and almost on par with the entire first-week total. The film will be crossing Rs. 50 crore mark in the second week, likely on Wednesday. From there, it is poised to reach Rs. 80 crore plus in its full run. If this momentum sustains, it may even aim to take out Project Hail Mary as the biggest Hollywood film of the year so far, at Rs. 90 crore.
The Day Wise Box Office Collections of Obsession in India are as follows:
| Day | Gross |
|---|---|
| Previews | Rs. 0.55 cr. |
| Friday | Rs. 1.60 cr. |
| Saturday | Rs. 3.25 cr. |
| Sunday | Rs. 3.75 cr. |
| Monday | Rs. 2.50 cr. |
| Tuesday | Rs. 3.40 cr. |
| Wednesday | Rs. 3.40 cr. |
| Thursday | Rs. 3.40 cr. |
| 2nd Friday | Rs. 4.00 cr. |
| 2nd Saturday | Rs. 8.00 cr. |
| Total | Rs. 33.85 cr. |
Obsession is reportedly made on a budget of just USD 750K / Rs. 6.75 crore approx. Adjusted for PPP, that would be equivalent to roughly Rs. 2-3 crore in India. Even taking the higher end of that range and factoring in release and marketing expenses, the total cost of production and release would still likely come in at under Rs. 5 crore. Against that, the theatrical share from India alone is set to be around Rs. 30 crore, making it an extraordinarily profitable venture.
We almost never see this in Bollywood nowadays. Some regional films do manage it, but nothing comes to mind for Bollywood. The production costs have ballooned, especially with star remunerations accounting for a significant portion of budgets. Even setting that aside, the production process isn’t efficient enough. Whenever costs are controlled, the quality often looks compromised on screen. Obsession is a reminder that this doesn’t have to be the case. Despite its low budget, the film never feels cheap, proving that disciplined spending and strong creative execution can coexist, which is something Bollywood should strive for, as the theatrical market isn’t what it was a decade ago.
