Since leaving the White House, former President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama, have turned their attention to building a strong portfolio through their production company, Higher Ground Productions. The pair have produced a variety of movies, TV shows and podcasts, including award-winning projects like American Factory, Rustin, and Our Great National Parks.
Now, the famous couple is stepping into theater with a Broadway revival of the Pulitzer-winning play Proof, starring Ayo Edebiri and Don Cheadle.

However, their Broadway venture is drawing some criticism. In late April 2026, sources told RadarOnline that the Obamas are facing backlash as premium seats for the show are reportedly priced as high as $349 per ticket.
Still, insiders emphasized that the negative reaction is misplaced, arguing that Barack and Michelle are being held responsible for a problem they had no part in creating.
“People are shocked—but this is what Broadway costs now,” one source said. “Broadway has quietly become a luxury experience. Premium pricing, big stars, limited runs—it all adds up fast.”
Even so, the insider noted that public expectations play a major role. “When people see the Obamas, they expect something more accessible,” they explained. “That’s where the disconnect is.”
The Obamas announced their involvement in Proof in March 2026, and on April 21, they shared a joint Facebook post expressing that they “can’t wait for you to see Proof on Broadway.”
“It’s a play that asks profound questions about what we inherit from the people we love most—brilliance, grief, doubt, and hope,” Barack and Michelle said. “Directed by Thomas Kail, Ayo Edebiri, Don Cheadle, Jin Ha and Kara Young give incredible performances that will stay with you long after you see it. We couldn’t be more proud that Higher Ground played a part in this production, and hope you’ll check it out.”
