Oakley Meta HSTN review: Smart glasses built for performance, not the masses

We recently got our hands on the Oakley Meta HSTN smart glasses, and this wasn’t our first brush with Meta’s smart eyewear ecosystem. Earlier, we also tested the Ray-Ban Meta glasses in New York, which gave us a solid reference point for what Meta is trying to achieve with AI-powered eyewear.
With the Oakley Meta HSTN, the focus clearly shifts towards performance users who want something sportier, tougher, and more tech-forward. These are not just stylish glasses with a camera slapped on.
They aim to blend Oakley’s iconic design language with Meta’s AI smarts, and for the most part, they succeed.
Our review unit came in black, which looks clean, understated, and surprisingly premium for something packing this much tech inside.

Price in India

In India, the Oakley Meta HSTN smart glasses start at Rs. 41,800 and go up to around Rs. 47,600 depending on the frame and lens combination. That firmly places them in premium territory, making this a niche product meant for early adopters, fitness enthusiasts, and creators who like experimenting with emerging tech.

Design & Comfort

At first glance, the Oakley Meta HSTN looks like a regular pair of Oakleys. The sculpted O-Matter frame carries Oakley’s signature sharp lines, and despite housing cameras, microphones, speakers, and sensors, the glasses stay relatively lightweight. We wear powered glasses every day, and since this was a review unit, we could not use them as our primary eyewear at all times. That said, you can get numbered lenses fitted into these frames from local optical vendors who have worked on them before, and the process is far easier and more accessible than you might expect.
Comfort is one of the strong points here. The fit is snug and ergonomic, making them suitable for long hours of wear. Whether it is commuting, casual walks, or workouts, the glasses sit securely without constantly needing adjustment. Most people we interacted with assumed these were standard transition glasses until they noticed the tiny camera or the LED indicator. That subtle design is a big win, especially if you do not want your smart glasses screaming “tech gadget” every time you step outside.

Oakley Meta HSTN packs a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera capable of shooting up to 3K video

Audio comes through discreet open-ear speakers built into the temples, allowing you to stay aware of your surroundings while listening to music or taking calls. Call quality is impressive too, helped by a custom five-microphone array that handles wind and background noise better than expected.

One area where Oakley trails slightly is the carry case. We felt the Ray-Ban Meta glasses cover was more premium and better built. In comparison, the Oakley case does not feel as rugged, with the top lid in particular coming across a bit flimsy.

Meta Features

This is where things get interesting. The Oakley Meta HSTN packs a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera capable of shooting up to 3K video, which is a noticeable upgrade over the Ray-Ban Meta glasses. Photos and videos look sharp enough for social media, especially Instagram, which clearly feels like Meta’s primary target platform.

You can capture content using a physical button or gestures, and everything syncs through the Meta AI companion app on Android and iOS.

Meta AI is activated by saying “Hey Meta,” letting you ask about weather, locations, general queries, or even help plan trips. During testing, responses were quick and mostly accurate, though you will need an internet connection for AI features.

The companion app also lets you manage media, tweak controls, update firmware, and connect services like Spotify, Amazon Music, Shazam, Strava, and more. If you already use Ray-Ban Meta glasses, you can manage both devices within the same app.

There is also support for accessibility features like Be My Eyes, which connects visually impaired users to volunteers for real-time assistance.

Oakley Meta HSTN

Oakley Meta HSTN supports fast-charging

The glasses come with IPX4 water resistance, so they can handle sweat and light rain, making them workout-friendly. However, the charging case does not offer water resistance, which feels like a missed opportunity for a product aimed at active users.

Battery

Battery life is another area where the Oakley Meta HSTN improves over the Ray-Ban Meta. Meta claims up to 8 hours on a single charge and up to 48 hours with the charging case. In real-world use, we got around 6 hours from the glasses and roughly 40 to 42 hours with the case, which is still solid for a device doing constant audio, video, and AI processing.

A handy bonus is fast charging. Pop the glasses into the case for about 20 minutes, and you get close to 50 percent charge, which is great when you are heading out in a hurry.

Verdict

The Oakley Meta HSTN smart glasses push Meta’s AI eyewear in a more performance-driven direction, with better battery life, a sharper camera, and a design that works well for active use. They remain expensive and niche, but for creators and fitness-focused users, they feel like a meaningful upgrade rather than a gimmick.

Strengths

The Ray-Ban Meta glasses shine with their lifestyle-first design and mass appeal, making them easier to wear daily and more socially discreet. In contrast, the Oakley Meta HSTN stands out for its sport-oriented build, improved battery life, and stronger camera performance, making it better suited for workouts, outdoor activities, and hands-free content creation.
