Nintendo Switch 2 and Switch NES, SNES, and Game Boy games reportedly getting challenges

Posted on

Major functionality is apparently planned for NES, SNES, and Game Boy games on Switch 2 and Switch with Nintendo gearing up to release a challenges feature.

You may have noticed that the apps for these platforms have been updated. You can download a patch to move the NES app to version 9.0.0. The SNES app was bumped up to version 6.0.0. Finally, the Game Boy app is now at version 4.0.0.

These are all major version increases. However, if you actually go inside each of the apps, nothing will seem different. Apparently that’s because they’re present in the background, but not actually live yet – we need to wait for Nintendo to turn everything on.

The claim about NES, SNES, and Game Boy challenges for Nintendo Switch 2 and Switch comes from LuigiBlood. This person has a history of uncovering various information through datamining.

According to LuigiBlood, the challenges are “akin to NES Remix” but “not the Remix kind”. He also apparently knows which games will be using the feature, but fans “will probably find out soon.”

Challenges could be yet another way for Nintendo to incentivize consumers to both join Switch Online and stay subscribed to the service. Of course, there haven’t been any official announcements.

If you’ve yet to join Nintendo Switch Online, we recently went over the service and examined whether it’s worth joining in 2026. You can find our verdict here.
