Newcastle United make first moves to steal Liverpool star

Newcastle United have made their first moves to steal one Liverpool star. Liverpool have the power to stop it.

TeamTalk claims Newcastle United have now made their first moves to sign Curtis Jones in the summer. They’re certainly not the first club to do so – but the Magpies feel they’ve got a chance of landing the Scouser.

Jones will enter the final year of his contract this summer and the way things are looking, Liverpool will try to sell him. There was a chance he departed back in January as Inter made a move, though Jones ultimately stayed.

But plenty of clubs are now in the market for him, along with Newcastle. Anfield Watch understands Manchester City have had a look into a deal.

Liverpool have a decision to make, then. They can either cash-in on a homegrown player before he departs for free or they can renew his contract and make him a key member of the squad.

Plenty in the Premier League believe it’s a mistake on the Reds to let Jones go and see a home for him at their club. The TT article also mentions Aston Villa as one such club, while Tottenham Hotspur have been linked several times in 2026.

Curtis Jones: Situation Summary

Liverpool Performance and Stats

As of 4 May 2026, Curtis Jones has become a vital tactical asset for Arne Slot, notably excelling in an emergency right-back role. The 25-year-old has made 45 appearances this season, contributing two goals and two assists across 2,582 minutes. His adaptability was highlighted in the recent 3–1 win over Crystal Palace and the 2–1 Merseyside derby victory, though he played the full 90 minutes in midfield during the 3–2 defeat to Manchester United on 3 May. Despite a groin scare earlier in April that threatened his Champions League involvement, Jones has remained largely available, maintaining an average FotMob rating of 6.89 and a pass completion rate exceeding 90%.

Transfer Speculation and Contract Status

Jones faces a pivotal summer as he enters the final year of his contract. Reports from early May indicate that extension talks have stalled, with Liverpool reportedly considering a sale to avoid a free transfer in 2027. Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton has been identified as a primary replacement. Aston Villa, Tottenham, and Inter Milan are all credited with interest in the Toxteth-born midfielder, who has now surpassed 200 appearances for his boyhood club.

International Standing

Despite his domestic consistency, Jones has struggled to break into Thomas Tuchel’s England plans. Having not featured for the senior side since last summer, he is currently viewed as an outsider for the 2026 World Cup squad this June, trailing behind the likes of Kobbie Mainoo and James Garner in the pecking order.
