Maurice DuBois To Depart ‘CBS Evening News’ On December 18

Maurice DuBois said Thursday he would leave his role as co-anchor of CBS Evening News on December 18, a move that has been expected in the aftermath of new leadership in the news division and the purchase of parent company Paramount by Skydance.

DuBois wrote on Instagram, “It has been the Honor of a Lifetime. 21 years altogether, including my time at WCBS-TV in New York City. What a privilege! To be welcomed into your homes night after night, delivering the news / meeting extraordinary people and telling their stories. I’ll leave filled with gratitude, cherished relationships and amazing memories. A couple weeks to go; until then, see you on The CBS Evening News every night at 6:30.”

His co-anchor, John Dickerson, said earlier that he would depart CBS News at the end of the year.

The evening news broadcast is being eyed for an overhaul by the new editor in chief of the news division, Bari Weiss.

Tom Cibrowski, president and executive editor of CBS News, said in a statement that more details of plans for CBS Evening News would be announced in the “near future.”

“Maurice has long represented what we do best at CBS News and Stations.” Cibrowski said. “For more than two decades, he has delivered the day’s biggest stories from our studios in New York and in the field. Later this month, Maurice will leave the network. We are grateful for his significant contributions, at both CBS News New York and the CBS Evening News. Maurice is deeply valued and respected as a journalist by all of us and we wish him much success.  It is my hope that we can work together again.”

Dickerson and DuBois had been in the anchor chair for less than a year, after the departure of Norah O’Donnell. The duo presided over a format change that put more emphasis on correspondent storytelling. But the broadcast has remained in third place, with little sign of audience gain. Tweaks have been made, with more emphasis on breaking news headlines, as is the case with its rivals as ABC World News Tonight with David Muir and NBC Nightly News with Tom Llamas.

DuBois had previously anchored on WCBS-TV in New York, having joined the network-owned station in 2004.
