West Brom loan proved to be a poor fit

Manchester United arranged Toby Collyer’s loan deal 24 hours before the Championship season kicked off.

West Brom began the season with an established pair of Championship midfielders, Alex Mowatt and Jayson Molumby, and the team started unbeaten in their first three games.

This made it tricky for Collyer to immediately force his way into the team, in contrast to Harry Amass at Sheffield Wednesday, who were crying out for reinforcements.

Collyer started only three games, in which he picked up an assist, but was not selected to play the full 90 minutes once.

He then picked up an injury that saw him sent back to United to undergo treatment, effectively ending his loan.

Insurance for United midfield crisis

Forget the choppy waters of the Championship, Ruben Amorim already knows what Toby Collyer is capable of in a Manchester United shirt.

12 months ago Amorim selected Collyer to start ahead of Casemiro in the Europa League, and was rewarded with an outstanding performance from the youngster.

Collyer started three games for United last season, and also featured a further eight times from the bench.

With injuries recently exposing the team’s weak midfield options, Collyer can provide extra insurance when he returns to fitness.

United do aim to sign another midfielder, and Collyer won’t be used as an excuse not to. But if a deal does fall through, it’s not a bad thing to keep him around, just in case.
