Who doesn’t dream of going to Canada and working, living their best life in a new country? But this “Canadian Dream” is getting a heavy dose of reality on social media. Sure, the brochure promises world-class degrees and scenic views but for Indian student Jyoti Kharayat, there is a more gritty, caffeinated reality.

In a video currently racking up massive engagement, Jyoti articulates the catch-22 that defines the immigrant student experience. “School jane ke liye fees chahiye, fees ke liye kaam chahiye,” she explains (You need fees to go to school, and you need work to pay the fees).

Her routine is a literal loop: School then Starbucks then home and back to school in the morning, and Starbucks again. It’s a schedule that leaves little room for the “college life” depicted in movies, yet Jyoti remains surprisingly optimistic, adding a poignant kicker to her video: “But at least I am happy.”

The comment section has become a hub for aspiring students and current expats, reflecting a mix of admiration and “FOMO” for the job she’s secured. “If you are happy that’s enough for a life 🙌,” wrote one user, while another noted, “We all need motivation from you.”

But the reality of the competitive part-time job scene in Canada is not lost on anyone. One user joked (but mostly seriously), “Muje bi starbucks me kaam dila do🥲🙃” (Get me a job at Starbucks too).
