Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool tenure begins with a tricky away fixture to Newcastle United on the opening Sunday of the 2024-25 Premier League season.
Former Bournemouth head coach Iraola will lead Liverpool into the new campaign following his appointment as Arne Slot’s successor. It is a summer of change at Anfield, with Iraola’s appointment coming alongside the exits of Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate.
Having won the 2024-25 league title, Liverpool suffered a tumultuous campaign marked with injuries and the passing of forward Diogo Jota. Despite finishing 25 points worse off than their triumphant term before, the Merseyside club qualified for the Champions League with a fifth-place finish.
Iraola’s side will benefit from the arrival of £60million Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet, after a deal was agreed in the winter window, and the arrival of Spain international winger Victor Munoz from Osasuna.
The first Merseyside derby of the season takes place at Hill Dickinson Stadium on the final weekend of November, before the reverse fixture at Anfield in late January.
Liverpool finish the season at home to Bournemouth.

A spicy opener for Iraola
Analysis by The Athletic’s Liverpool correspondent Gregg Evans
Liverpool face a spicy opening game of the season away at Newcastle with a number of side stories likely to dominate the build-up.
Record signing Alexander Isak will return to the club he left amid controversy while Victor Munoz has the chance to show Newcastle what they missed out on after Liverpool hijacked their move for the Spanish winger.
The game is scheduled for Sunday August 23 (4:30pm) before new head coach Iraola takes charge of his first game at Anfield a week later against Nottingham Forest.
Liverpool have a relatively kind set of opening games as they travel to newly-promoted Ipswich Town and host Fulham before Iraola returns to the Vitality Stadium on September 19 to take on Bournemouth.
The first Merseyside derby of the season will be away at Everton on November 28 with the return fixture set for January 30.
Liverpool travel to Hull City on Boxing Day and will close the season at home to Bournemouth on May 30, 2027, after a final away game at Brighton & Hove Albion.
After a disappointing campaign and a summer change in the dugout, Liverpool will be eager to make a strong start as Iraola looks to set the tone for a new era at Anfield.
Key dates for the 2026-27 season
The summer transfer window officially opened on Monday, June 15 and closes on Tuesday, September 1 at 11pm (BST).
Clubs will have a further opportunity to do business during the winter transfer window, which will open on Friday, January 1 and close on Friday, February 1 at 11pm (GMT).
The season begins with the 2026 Community Shield between league champions Arsenal and FA Cup winners Manchester City on Sunday, August 16.
The 11 Premier League teams not participating in European competition will enter the Carabao Cup at the second round, while the nine teams who qualified for Europe will join in round three. These are set to take place in August.
Premier League teams will enter the FA Cup at the third round stage, which takes place across the weekend of January 9 to 10.
The 2026-27 Premier League season will conclude on Sunday, May 30, 2027.
What about the Champions League?
Liverpool benefited from the Premier League’s additional Champions League spot in order to qualify for the 2026-27 competition. Their tally of 60 points was the lowest required for an English team to directly qualify for the group stage/league phase since the competition was rebranded.
The Champions League ‘group stage’ will again be a single 36-team league phase. Each side plays eight different teams — four at home and four away — and the top eight automatically progress to the last 16. Ninth to 24th contest a knockout round play-off to determine the remaining eight last 16 sides.
The Champions League final will take place at Atletico Madrid’s Estadio Metropolitano in Spain.
