The former West Ham forward had been working at Seagrave for a number of weeks but has now picked up an injury, with City choosing not to go through with a deal
Leicester City’s deal for striker Michail Antonio has fallen through after the striker picked up an injury.
Free agent Antonio has been training at City’s Seagrave base since early December and the club were in talks over a contract for the 35-year-old forward.
But City now won’t go ahead with a deal after Antonio suffered an injury in training. It’s understood it’s a muscle issue that will keep the striker out for a number of weeks.
City manager Marti Cifuentes had previously spoken positively about Antonio and had been impressed with his fitness, despite it being more than a year since his last club match following a serious car accident in December 2024.
“Michail Antonio, unfortunately he had a small setback during the training with us and that means unfortunately we won’t proceed in the process we started,” Cifuentes said in his press conference after the 2-1 win over West Brom.
“It’s a pity because he’s a great guy, a great professional. He’s shown really good things, not only from a football perspective but from a personal perspective in the weeks he has been with us. But that changes the plan.”
City are short of a striker after Julian Carranza went back to Feyenoord on Friday and that remains the priority position for the club this month.
Jordan Ayew and Patson Daka have just four non-penalty goals between them, albeit Ayew did get one of those on Monday night, finishing off an excellent team move.
“It’s something we’re analysing,” Cifuentes said on the prospect of bringing in another striker.
“Together with the club we have daily discussions about it. We’re going to try to do our best to improve the team if there’s an opportunity to do it.”
