Lancashire Women Preview

Lancashire Women’s season has not gotten off to the good start they expected. They have lost both matches played so far this season. The first loss came against Surrey Women, where they failed to defend a score of 186 runs.

In their last match against The Blaze Women, they fell 20 runs short with the bat after batting first. Once again, a poor bowling effort cost them, and The Blaze Women won the match by 3 wickets.

Against The Blaze Women, Lancashire lost the toss and were asked to bat first. They were immediately put into trouble by The Blaze’s bowlers, leaving Lancashire’s score at 33/4 after 6 overs. However, it was the experience of Meg Lanning that saved them.

Lanning played one of the best innings in this year’s T20 Blast, scoring an unbeaten 81 runs off 49 balls, smashing 9 fours and 3 sixes. She was well supported by Ailsa Lister, who scored 39 runs off 28 balls. This duo added 100 runs off 59 balls for the 6th wicket, helping Lancashire end their innings at 162/5.

In defense of this score, Lancashire Women took the wicket of Marie Kelly early in the innings, but The Blaze Women fought back with a quick-fire 71-run partnership for the 2nd wicket. The spin duo of Fi Morris (3/25) and Hannah Jones (1/33) then dragged the game back in Lancashire’s favor, reducing The Blaze Women to 114/6 in 14 overs. However, the bowlers ultimately failed to defend 48 runs in the last 6 overs.

This poor bowling performance is hurting Lancashire’s chances early in the season. This upcoming home game becomes crucial for them as they look to end their two-match losing streak and secure their first win of the season.

Somerset Women Preview

Somerset Women are off to a perfect start to their season, though they will be disappointed with the tie in their first match against Hampshire Women, where they failed to defend 16 runs in the final over. However, in their last two matches, they have performed exceptionally well with both bat and ball.

In the second match of their season, Somerset Women chased down 167 runs with ease against Warwickshire Women. Their skipper, Sophie Luff, scored 58 runs off 33 balls, and Anika Learoyd steered the side home with an unbeaten 60 runs off 49 balls.

That same form was carried over by the Somerset top order in their last match against Yorkshire Women. Openers Rebecca Odgers (30 runs) and Sophie Luff (57 runs) added 68 runs in 7.3 overs, while Anika Learoyd carried on from where she left off, scoring 35 runs off 28 balls.

But the real game-changer was the knock by Niamh Holland, who provided the impetus to the innings in the death overs, scoring 41* runs off 27 balls to help Somerset Women finish at 177/5.

Then, they restricted Yorkshire Women to 138/9 in 20 overs. Olivia Barnes and Lola Harris did most of the damage in the middle overs, picking up 3 wickets each, while Erin Vukusic picked up two wickets by containing the batters in the powerplay and death overs.

Somerset Women are in really good form this season and look like the most clinical side with all bases covered. Notably, when two of their top four batters go on to score over 30 runs, they go on to win the match. Although their spinners might sometimes be a bit on the expensive side in the middle overs, their pacers have been excellent, picking up crucial wickets in the powerplay.
