Former Arsenal defender Gael Clichy has been appointed as the new head coach of Caen, which is majority-owned by superstar player Kylian Mbappe. This marks his first senior managerial role at the French club currently languishing in the third tier of French football. The 40-year-old Frenchman replaces Maxime d’Ornano, who was sacked following a poor run of form and an early exit from the Coupe de France.
Clichy, a key member of Arsenal’s Invincibles squad that won the 2003-04 Premier League title unbeaten, brings a wealth of elite experience from his playing days at Arsenal and Manchester City. He spent eight years at Arsenal from 2003 to 2011, making over 187 appearances and contributing to their last league triumph.

Caen, relegated from Ligue 2 last season, sit mid-table in the Championnat National and have struggled with inconsistency and a lack of direction. The club has also faced fan protests over ownership decisions, including the recent dismissal of club legend Nicolas Seube, adding pressure on Clichy to inspire a revival.
Clichy’s appointment comes as a surprise, given his limited coaching experience, though he has worked in youth development roles since retiring in 2020. He aims to draw on his background to motivate a squad in need of leadership amid supporter unrest.
This move highlights Clichy’s transition from player to coach, following in the footsteps of former teammates like Mikel Arteta at Arsenal. Clichy’s time at Arsenal saw him form part of a legendary backline alongside Ashley Cole, contributing to their defensive solidity.

Caen’s decision to appoint Clichy reflects a hope that his elite pedigree will bring stability and success back to the club. The Frenchman will need to hit the ground running to turn around their fortunes in a competitive third tier.
Arsenal fans have reacted with nostalgia on social media, celebrating one of the Invincibles taking his first managerial step. This development adds to the growing list of former Arsenal stars entering coaching, inspiring the next generation.
As Arsenal chase their first title in over two decades, Clichy’s new role serves as a reminder of the club’s lasting impact on its alumni. His success at Caen will be watched closely by Gunners supporters worldwide.
